Meet the Team
John Layton
Regional Sales Director
John is the Regional Advertising Director for Sun Media Group. He graduated from the University of Florida after earning his degrees in public relations and psychology. In 1996, he moved to Atlanta, working for an advertising and public relations firm, Michael Parver Associates, where he helped promote movie premieres for companies such as Warner Brothers, DreamWorks and Paramount. John moved to New England and joined the Newport Daily News in 1998, serving as the Classified and Internet Advertising Manager. John currently serves on the board of the Ocean Community Chamber of Commerce and is a Scout Leader for Troop 5 North Kingstown.
When John is at home he enjoys spending time with his wife Kathleen and their family: Arabella, 20, Beckett, 14, Holden, 12.
Jennifer Obrey
Art Director
Jennifer is the Art Director for Sun Media Group and managing the Sun Graphics Division of the organization. Jen has been with the company for over 14 years.
She relocated to Southeastern CT in 1996 from the Boston area and moved to Pawcatuck in 2006. Jennifer has been very involved with numerous local organizations over the years and currently a board member for The Friends of Stonington Crew, The Westerly Library & Wilcox Park Association and a member of the Westerly High School Designer Advisory Board. For years, she has volunteered as a coordinator of media and program design of the Stonington Schools drama productions and been very involved with many events and fundraisers with the Stonington School system.
She loves being involved with coaching and refereeing basketball though numerous organizations in town at all levels with her children (ages 20, 17, 14) or golfing and relaxing with her husband of 23+ years.

Jessica Monk is the Digital Media Coordinator for Sun Media Group and has been with the company for 4 years. She graduated with a Bachelors in Graphic Design from Johnson & Wales, Providence and has been in the Digital Media Industry since 2014.
When she's not working shes spending time with with her husband, dog and two boys.
Carol Scholtz
Media Consultant
Carol is a Media Consultant at Sun Media Group and has been with the company for 10 years.
Carol started her career in the Sales and Marketing Department of a Publishing House. As a Sales Manager, she built relationships with buyers at large retailers like Barnes and Noble and BAM, as well as small mom and pop bookstores to get titles placed all over the country.
She moved from there to a Direct Mail Marketing company and helped small to medium sized businesses nationwide reach their target audiences.
In 2009 she began her career at The Westerly Sun doing what she loves best, helping local businesses grow. As the company has evolved to become The Sun Media Group, she enjoys educating businesses about many different ways she can help them stay “top of mind” in their communities.
Married in 2002, Carol and her wife Christine each brought a child to the marriage. Her free time is spent making memories with family and friends.

Outside of the office, Alex enjoys traveling, socializing with friends and spending time with his amazing daughter.
